What do I do if I don't know what years I paid taxes

I am aware that I didn't pay my taxes in 2004, but I am not sure about previous years.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to your question.

You can contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040. Select option 1 and then option 4. Tell the agent that comes on the line that you wish to speak to someone about your tax account, that you are trying to determinen which years you might have missed filing a tax return.

Before doing that, you may want to contact the Social Security Administration for a statement of account. The Social Security Administration can produce a report for you that lists your life time earnings by year. This list may be helpful when talking to the IRS about your account.

Generally, the IRS may only be able to go back 10 years on your account.

You can get a SSA copy of your earnings by employer by using the following form:
